I am a senior at Purdue University studing Agriculture Education and have recently became interested in hippothearpy. I have always been around horses and feel like you, that horses can help the human body, both physically and mentally. I was wondering is there someway I can get certified in Hippothearpy without attending school to become a thearpist. There is nothing around my area like this to help people and I would love to be able to get one started. If I am not able to be certifed as a Hippothearpist, is there something I can do to be able to preform some of these activies. My main goal is to help others, I believe strongly in the aid of horses to help people.
Thank you for your time, Jenifer Steffy

Hi Gina, I would love to learn more about how you apply the DIR model to equine assisted theapy. I am a speech therapist who is just starting out with hippotherapy, and I would love some input as to how to combine the two. Thank you for any input you can offer :)

Kimberly,

It sounds as though your son is receiving therapy through an early intervention program at this time. Early intervention provides services for children birth through three years old. After three years old your child should be eligible for coverage through your medical insurance. Call your insurance company and ask if you have outpatient OT, PT or SLP (whichever therapist he is seeing) coverage and ask for a copy of the exclusions for your particular policy. If hippotherapy is not listed as an exclusion you can try to submit your billing statements. Your therapist should provide you with a billing statement that uses the CPT codes that reflect what they did with your child. The therapist has to designate which codes apply to what techniques they used while working with your son.

My almost 3 yr old son is mentally and physically disabled he does do the hippo therapy and loves it but I was just told that when he turns 3 and stops with all his therapist when he ages out at 3 that my blue cross will not pay for this therapy. If I call the insurance company and give them one of these codes do you think they will pay?

Great idea. I have developed something similar for my riders, but I really like the idea of additional directions on the back and the ideas for various ages.

Julie,

The OT could need supervision if they have minimal training in hippotherapy, could require a NARHA certified instructor to be part of their session if they work at a NARHA center or require supervision as required by their employer. Is there more information you were looking for?
